small and privileged municipality in the Alt Empordà region. Located between the Cap de Creus Natural Park and the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Park.

The municipality of Pau borders with the municipality of Vilajuïga to the northwest, with the one of Port de la Selva to the northeast, with the one of Palau-Saverdera to the east, with the one of Castelló d’Empúries to the south, with the of Peralada by the southwest and with the one of Pedret and Marzà by the west.

The municipality of Pau extends along the southern slopes of the Sierra de Rodes, in contact with the alluvial plain of the Muga basin, near the disappeared lake of Castellón, in contact with the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà .
The village is in the contact area between the mountain and the plain. The place is already mentioned in 982. The old castle of Pau became the center of the barony of Pau.

The whole town is grouped around the church and the square, and stretches along the paths that lead to it. The houses, many of them two-storey and with attics or barns at the top, cellars covered with stone or brick vaults on the ground floor and terraces attached to the facades on semicircular arches, make up a set of great interest. Others have been converted into second homes, as have many new constructions that have been carried out in recent years in the two urbanisations of the town: the Els Olivars Urbanization and the La Vinya Urbanization. The expansion of the urban area has led to a progressive but moderate growth of the town and the number of its inhabitants in recent times.

The most important economic activity is agriculture, based mainly on rainfed crops (cereals, corn, fodder, olive trees and vineyards). The work of the latter two, the vineyard and the olive tree, is reflected in the agricultural cooperative. Empordalia SCCL is, nowadays, one of the leading cooperatives in Alt Empordà region. In terms of livestock, the most representative is cattle, followed by poultry. This sector, and the activities derived from agriculture, complement the agricultural economy of Pau.

Construction is another important economic aspect. Its incidence is due, in large part, to the influence it receives from the nearest tourist centers.
